Memory Conflict?? [HELP] {solved :-D}
My pc config is like this...

Intel quad core q6600
Intel DG33FB Motherboard
2 gb transcend ram 800 mhz with latency 5-5-5-18
Nvidia 8600 GT..
Cheap PSU that comes with cabinet...
Windows 7 32 bit

Pc was running fine and i'm able to play even latest games at 1600 * 1050 res with medium settings... (nw playing fif 11 & civilization 5)

but since 2 gb ram was not just enough, i got a new transcend 2 gb 800mhz ram, but with latencies 6-6-6-18.. (5-5-5-18 was unavailable anywer)

running in dual channel mode and the latency nw in bios shows 5-6-6-18..

running in single channel mode, performance was not good... high cpu usage even when accessing hard disk folders, and took ~ 50 seconds to open small folders...

now am running in dual channel mode, and enabled physical address extension (PAE) to use 4gb ram in 32 bit windows 7...

Now performance of lightroom and photoshop is very good, but i'm not able to play any games... they get stuck even in startup videos.. (tried with physical address disabled too)

is it a case of different latencies?? or is my ram conflicting with graphics card??

any idea??

p.s: had a similar problem with high cpu usage, when i tried to install 5-5-5-18 2gb ram like 1.5 yrs ago.. that time i just returned the ram..

RE: Memory Conflict?? [HELP] {solved :-D}
Okay i solved the problem like this... took a bit of googling and guesswork..

my cpu's FSB is 266 mhz...

and the ddr2 800 memory stick's clock speed is 400 mhz...

since compie runs at the speed of slowest component, my memory was also running at 266 mhz...

i used cpu z to note the latencies of the memory sticks...

older one had this setting of clock speed 266 mhz and timings as 4-4-4-12
newer one had this setting of 333 mhz and 4-5-5-15

so i reduced overall memory speed in bios from 800 mhz (ram clock speed 400mhz) to 667 mhz (ram clock speed 333.5 mhz)

and i chose the lower latency of 4-5-5-15, as ram latencies of both, in bios....

now everything works smooth...

another solution would ve been to overclock my CPU's FSB from 200mhz to 400mhz to match the ram clock....

but am nt too keen about overclocking, and am nt sure if it's even possible with intel motherboards...

so if ur gonna have ram running at different speeds ur gonna have some issues is it ?

Argument is bad but Discussion is good ! Because argument is to find WHO is right while discussion is to find WHAT is right !!

i think the new hardware now a days have auto detection thing.
here is what i mean: the new hardware adjusts it performance parameters according to support older hardware. so both things can work in harmony. so y all manual settings needed?

^ yeah auto settings in bios ram both ram at 400mhz and 5-6-6-18, and for some reason games din like it...

i tried running at 333mhz and 4-5-5-15, and works.... just a lucky chance.. i think...

RE: Memory Conflict?? [HELP] {solved :-D}
dude why you running it at 266? run it at 333MHz,else your processor will run at 2.1GHz instead of 2.66.

Just adjust the memory timings manually, 5-5-5-15 @333MHz FSB. Adjust the memory divider so that memory runs at 400MHz.

Memory timings and FSB have some optimum ratings, now, try running system at these settings:

FSB:400
Multiplier : 7 (reduce it from 8)
Memory Divider:1:1 or 2 whatever is in the BIOS
Memory timings: 5-5-5-15

Increase CPU Voltage by a small amount, say 0.1V.

Apply new settings.

If you system does not POST, just short the CMOS jumper,it will be near the CMOS batter itself and will read CLR_CMOS or something similar, else use a screw driver and short the battery,it will clear the BIOS and apply default settings.
