Linksys WRT54G Wireless router.
Hi friends,

Today I got a Linksys WRT54G 4 port Ethernet, dual antenna WiFi router.

I got that in Sunday market (famous used, scrap market) in Bangalore
I got the router + power adapter + 4 port USB hub for 300Rs
The router is in good condition without any scratch.

So it took about 20 min to configure it and its a worth product even say for 1000 Rs.
It is having all the feature that a router should have, the range is ~ 30 mts (as I have checked now, without walls)
The security is excellent, can hide the router from scan, can disable specific port functions like TELNET, PING etc etc...
Can be accessed generally also and with specific MAC ID.

Over all If you dont need ADSL then its the best router as I have seen.

For WiFi routing.

ADSL is used to connect to internet from the telephone line but my internet connection is DSL-Cable
So It directly comes to my home with Ethernet cable.

I have configured it with my static IP and then routed it across 3 systems, 1 Lap, 2 cell phones...
The internal LAN speed is around 50 MBPS, thats because of my cable speed, I am using a old CAT4 cable.
I have a CAT 6 D-Link cable with me but no time to crimp and use it. Once I put CAT 6 the speed will be upto 1 GBPS.

Which ISP ? They are giving a static IP ?

How do you configure the wireless network ? Does the ethernet from ISP goes directly to the router ? Or does it need to be connected to one system which should be always ON for others to access ?

Can you post a snap of the backside of router ? How many ethernet ports are there ?

Do you use them to configure internal LAN ? You can configure a wireless LAN na. By that way, you can get away with the hassle of wires. The transfer speed will be 54 Mbps max.

Not Mbps ?

50 MBps = 400 Mbps. I thought LAN speed will be 100 Mbps max (please correct me if I am wrong).

That depends on your lan card. Now a days the built-in lan card supports upto 1 Gbps = 128 MBPS

I am using a HP high speed network card which usually is used for virtual servers. supporting upto 30 Gbps Grin

Laugh

Even with 30 Gbps card, you won't get that speed if not using SSD I think.

Explain this too

RE: Linksys WRT54G Wireless router.
Ooops sorry didnt read that Grin

1) The ethernet from ISP goes directly to Router. In router configuration you can assign it a static IP and all the systems are connected through it with Obtain IP automatically because now we dont need to configure IP.
Any system can connect to router directly no gateway system required.

2) 4 + 1 ports.
4 Ethernet ports for 4 systems
1 Ethernet port for ISP (WAN)

3) Yes I am using it for internal LAN too, yes I can use wireless but for that ill have to put wireless adapter to desktops also.
Eventually Ill do it but till then using wires.... and when the wires dont work ill use PB's universal resolution method... "Jiggling the wires " Grin
