RE: Ajanta & Ellora
Ellora is underrated. Ajanta is overrated.

When I was a student in Design school we had a one week long study trip to both Ellora and Ajanta. Ellora is wonderful...you just awe at what we as an ancient civilization were able to achieve.

Cave #16 (The Kailas Temple) is a prime example of that. You have to see it to believe it! A huge temple complex carved out of Solid black Granite. Unlike most temples it wasn't built using blocks of stone and mortar...instead it was carved out of solid rock!!!

The second from last photograph is of the entrance cave #16.

Our entire class had taken up a few caves for measure drawing and sketching. I measure drew cave #5.Smile (50 feet long and 22 feet wide; was used as a dining hall for monks who stayed here for theological studies. It had intricate carvings on all the columns and a huge statue of Buddha in the Garbha Griha (inner Sanctum) with meditation rooms flanking the main hall on both sides)

The first few caves @ Ellora #1 - #13 are Buddhist, #14-23 are Hindu and the rest are of Jain architecture/influence.

RE: Ajanta & Ellora
Just a tip for the intending visitor,
Ajanta remains closed on Monday and Ellora ramains closed on Tuesday.

Both have their unique effect on the visitor. Ellora is imposing with its massive architectural brilliance while Ajanta dazzles with its paintings that have remained for so many thousand years. Contrary to popular understanding, even Ajanta has several stone carvings including one full stupa carved inside a cave. There are also several unfinished caves that give an idea of the mammoth effort that underwent in creating these timeless jewels.

When I visited Ajanta, I was fortunate in getting the services of a very knowledgeable guide who who used a pocket torch to show the sparkling of a necklace in one of the paintings. it was an amazing experience.
